Legal Counsel (12-18 months contract)
Job Summary
Dollarama is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our legal team on a 12–18-month contract. Reporting to the Senior Director, Legal Affairs and Privacy Officer, the Legal Counsel will provide timely and practical legal advice on commercial matters and privacy compliance to support the company's day-to-day business and operational activities across Canada, and contractual matters involving Latin America and Australia.
The Legal Counsel will work collaboratively with business partners and key stakeholders to draft, negotiate and review commercial agreements, advise on Canadian and Quebec privacy law requirements, and provide guidance on technology and AI-related matters. This role is integral to mitigating legal risk and safeguarding the company's assets and reputation.
Key Accountabilities
• Provide timely and practical legal advice on commercial and privacy matters to support business and operational activities.
• Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including vendor contracts, licensing, technology agreements and terms of service.
• Conduct legal research and provide legal guidance on technology and AI matters, including advising on compliance requirements and developing policies relating to emerging technologies.
• Support cross-functional teams across the organization, including Projects, Cybersecurity, IT and Technology.
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments affecting the company's operations and advise business partners on potential impacts and risks.
• Identify legal risks associated with proposed business activities and collaborate with internal partners to develop practical mitigation strategies
• Participate in cross-functional initiatives and projects, including impact assessments related to new legislation, service offerings or technologies.
• Knowledge of Canadian privacy legislation (including PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25) and experience reviewing and assessing privacy impact assessments and providing recommendations to mitigate privacy risks is an asset.
Job Requirements
• Law degree from a recognized university and member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec.
• 3 to 5 years of commercial experience acquired in-house and/or in private practice.
• Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements.
• Knowledge of Canadian privacy legislation, including PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25 is an asset.
• Familiarity with technology matters, AI and emerging technologies is an asset.
• Proven ability to provide practical legal advice and to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
• Strong organizational skills with sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage priorities and a high volume of projects simultaneously.
• Demonstrates strong digital and technology dexterity, including proficiency in the use of AI tools and legal technology solutions.
• This is a hybrid role, based in Montreal.
