Administrator, Backup
Job Summary
The Backup Administrator is responsible for the administration, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the organization's enterprise backup and recovery services. This role serves as the primary subject matter expert for the Commvault platform and is responsible for ensuring the integrity, availability, and recoverability of business-critical data across approximately 700 servers and workloads. In addition to Commvault, the incumbent will oversee backup operations delivered through Rubrik and Google Cloud Backup & Disaster Recovery solutions and coordinate regular recovery testing with infrastructure, application, database, and cloud teams.
Key Accountabilities
Commvault Administration
- Act as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for the Commvault backup environment.
- Manage, monitor, and maintain Commvault backup policies, schedules, retention settings, and recovery configurations.
- Investigate and resolve Commvault backup failures, performance issues, and recovery incidents.
- Perform ongoing maintenance, upgrades, patching, and configuration reviews for the Commvault platform.
- Ensure Commvault backups are completed successfully and meet established recovery requirements.
Enterprise Backup Operations
- Manage and support enterprise backup services across Commvault, Rubrik, and Google Cloud Backup & Disaster Recovery.
- Monitor daily backup operations and address failures or exceptions in a timely manner.
- Validate backup integrity and ensure recovery objectives, including RPO and RTO, are met.
- Maintain backup documentation, operational procedures, and recovery runbooks.
- Produce operational reports related to backup success rates, failures, capacity, and recovery testing.
Restore Testing and Disaster Recovery
- Plan, coordinate, and execute regular restore and recovery testing activities.
- Work with infrastructure, application, database, and cloud teams to validate recoverability of critical systems.
- Document restore test results, issues identified, and required remediation actions.
- Support disaster recovery exercises, audits, and compliance-related activities.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve backup reliability, automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency.
- Recommend improvements to backup processes, standards, and platform configurations.
- Support infrastructure and cloud projects requiring backup and recovery integration.
Job Requirements
- Minimum five (5) years of experience administering enterprise backup and recovery solutions;
- Strong hands-on experience with Commvault administration, troubleshooting, and recovery operation;
- Experience supporting enterprise backup environments protecting critical business workloads;
- Experience with Rubrik and cloud-based backup solutions such as Google Cloud Backup & Disaster Recovery is considered an asset;
- Strong understanding of backup, retention, disaster recovery, and data protection best practices;
- Experience supporting Windows, Linux, virtualized, and cloud-hosted environments;
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills; and
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to coordinate recovery testing and disaster recovery activities across multiple teams.
